Community Heritage Network

PROJECT SUMMARY

Museums are integral to community development and overall quality of life. Despite this, since the economic crisis began in 2007, many arts and culture programs have seen their public and private funding cut, their museums closed, and their collections sold or left to degrade beyond recognition. Such is the case for the museums and history centers surrounding UC Merced which have not been able to keep up with the demands of preservation. The degradation of accession records, archives, and objects has reached the point where objects are no longer able to be re-connected with the data associated with these items. The Community Heritage Network aims to bring together the local museums and history centers in the area around UC Merced to centralize heritage collections management for the San Joaquin Valley. This will not only create a platform for long-term data preservation and sustainability, but will facilitate heritage data accessibility for academic and ‘non-academic’ communities alike, thus fostering a more collaborative relationship between institutions and the public.

Goals

  1. Provide services (digital preservation and back-up of record) to local museums and history centers
  2. Make records available to the local communities and general public
  3. Develop community-engaged research and disseminate results in publications and exhibits
  4. Use the Community Heritage Network as a teaching tool
